How to spot a counterfeit supplement listing

Seven signals worth thirty seconds of your time before you pay, and one structural reason marketplace listings are riskier than they look.

The biggest risk with a marketplace supplement listing is not the price — it is that a third-party order usually falls outside the manufacturer's guarantee. If something is wrong, the refund route you were counting on does not apply to you.

Why this category attracts counterfeits

Supplements are small, light, long-dated and expensive per gram, and the packaging is straightforward to imitate. There is no way to identify a counterfeit from a photograph, and by the time the bottle is in your hand, your money has gone through a seller you cannot identify.

Seven signals worth checking

  1. A price far below the official range. Nobody sells at a loss for long. Deep discounts usually mean expired stock, a grey-market import, or a counterfeit.
  2. Photographs that do not match current packaging. Wrong capsule count, outdated label design, a different seal. Compare against the official product page before paying.
  3. No identifiable seller. If you cannot tell who is taking your money, you cannot tell who owes you a refund.
  4. Vague or missing refund terms. “Contact us for returns” with no window, no address and no process is not a refund policy.
  5. Reviews that do not describe the product. Bulk-purchased reviews are generic and oddly enthusiastic about shipping speed rather than the thing in the bottle.
  6. Expiry dates not shown or visibly close. A six-month bundle needs at least a year of shelf life to be worth buying.
  7. Pressure mechanics. Countdown timers and invented stock counters exist to stop you checking the six points above.

The guarantee problem

Manufacturer guarantees generally apply to orders placed with the manufacturer or their authorised seller. Buy from a third-party reseller and you are usually relying on the marketplace's own returns process, which is a different thing with a different, usually shorter, window.

For a product bought to be judged over eight weeks, that gap matters enormously. A thirty-day marketplace return window closes before you have finished assessing it.

What to do when the box arrives

  1. Check the seal is intact and the bottle is not visibly tampered with.
  2. Compare the label against the official product photographs.
  3. Check the expiry date against how long the bundle will last you.
  4. Photograph the label, including the Supplement Facts panel and other-ingredients line.
  5. Calendar the refund deadline before you take the first capsule.

If something looks wrong

Do not take it. Contact the seller in writing, with photographs, immediately. Shipping and product-condition claim windows are usually much shorter than refund windows, so a week of hesitation can close the option.
